EMERGING OF VAIKOM VIJAYALAKSHMI AS A PLAYBACK SINGER
When Vaikom Vijayalakshmi first met Simon George, she was mainly known for playing the veena and performing classical music. Recognizing the unique quality and potential of her voice, Simon George encouraged her to explore film songs alongside her classical training. This pivotal encouragement proved transformative, leading her to enter the world of playback singing.
She first sang the film song “Kiliye Kiliye” (selected for her by Simon George) in one of his stage programmes. Hearing her sing this song in another programme, M. Jayachandran selected her for his film Celluloid. Her breakthrough came with the soulful rendition of “Kaatte Kaatte” in the Malayalam film Celluloid, which brought her widespread acclaim. Today, Vaikom Vijayalakshmi stands as a celebrated playback singer, performing across multiple languages and earning recognition throughout the world.
